C.J. Krawczyk

C.J. is a commercial litigator with nearly 20 years of experience representing clients in complex matters and “bet the company” cases.  C.J.’s nationwide practice focuses primarily on the areas of securities, financial services, shareholder disputes, as well as employment, transportation, and construction litigation.  Recently, his representation of investors harmed in the Financial Crisis resulted in two of the largest recoveries in Wisconsin history.  C.J. currently serves as class counsel in a certified nationwide class action pending in the District Court of Utah and has prosecuted, and defended, eight and nine-figure claims in courts across the country.  C.J. has been named one of the Top 50 Lawyers in Wisconsin by Super Lawyers (2016-17), recognized as a “Leader in the Law” by the Wisconsin Law Journal (2012), and selected as one of the Best Lawyers in America (2013-23).

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

•  Represented five Wisconsin school districts in a $200 million securities fraud case related to investments made in synthetic credit derivatives, including collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps.  The $218 million settlement obtained on behalf of the districts after four years of litigation is the second largest civil settlement in Wisconsin history.  Kenosha Unified School District, et al. v. Stifel Nicolaus & Co., Inc., et al., 2008-CV-013726 (Milwaukee Co. Circuit Court)

 

•  Successfully defended a group of financial advisors who left their employer to establish their own firm.  Clients’ former employer alleged breach of fiduciary duty, theft of trade secrets, conversion and claimed damages in excess of $40 million.  Case was finally resolved when the employer’s third request for a permanent injunction was denied after a two-day hearing.  Robert W. Baird & Co., Inc. v. Red Granite LLC, et al., 2006-CV-004178 (Milwaukee Co. Circuit Court)

 

•  Obtained a $15 million judgment on behalf of Wisconsin’s largest health care provider in a breach of contract action centered on disputed language in a hospital services agreement.  Aurora Health Care, Inc. v. Managed Health Services Ins. Corp., 2003-CV-004712 (Milwaukee Co. Circuit Court)

 

•  Successfully defended a major international industrial staffing firm and its insurer against negligence and products liability claims arising out of the collapse and total loss of a $60 million printing facility.  Industrial Risk Insurers, et al. v. American Engineering Testing, Inc., et al., 2003-CV-007184 (Milwaukee Co. Circuit Court)

ABOUT C.J.

A lifelong Milwaukeean, C.J. lives on the city’s east side with his wife, Julie. The two are active in community causes, particularly in the areas of animal welfare, historic preservation, and local radio. Outside the office, C.J. enjoys traveling, drinking coffee, playing basketball, and going to shows.
