Mike is a skilled and experienced trial and appellate attorney who comes to the firm after extensive experience at large firms in Wisconsin and Michigan. His practice focuses primarily on “fair competition” lawsuits involving noncompete agreements, the misappropriation of trade secrets and other confidential information, and related tort and statutory claims between employers and their current or former employees. Mike has successfully prosecuted and defeated motions for emergency injunctive relief, as well as dispositive motions relating to the enforcement of post-employment restrictive covenants. Mike is recognized as an expert in Wisconsin’s unique restrictive covenant laws, frequently lecturing on the topic at State Bar CLE’s or other educational forums.
Mike also has extensive commercial litigation experience, serving as lead counsel in numerous “bet the company” and multi-million dollar disputes in federal and state courts across the country. This includes successfully defending or prosecuting claims arising from breaches of contract and related business torts, commissions and payment disputes, theft and misappropriation of corporate assets, “piercing the corporate veil” and related corporate structure disputes, and shareholder and corporate governance issues. This includes litigating such disputes against foreign corporations, as Mike has utilized his experience with the Hague and New York conventions in cases against corporations from France, Japan, China, and Bermuda.
Most of all, Mike is known as a courtroom specialist who knows how to efficiently and effectively bring a dispute through trial. He has a record of successfully prosecuting or defending high-profile and substantial damages disputes before juries in state and federal court, and then successfully protecting those verdicts on appeal.
Mike is a family man and an avid sports fan. He has two children, Luke and Katie, and his time out of the office is largely spent coaching their baseball and basketball teams and attending their other activities with his wife, Sandy. A native Iowan who was born in Iowa City, Mike remains loyal to his Iowa Hawkeyes. And, having a previous career working in political campaigns, Mike has retained an interest in following politics.
